MOHAKA SETTLERS.
PETITION TO COME INTO HAWKE’S BAY COUNTY. THEIR INTERESTS AND ROADS LEAD TO NAPIER. A special meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council will take place next Tuesday, when the question of the boundaries of the Wairoa County will be discussed. The ratepayers of Mohaka will be represented. A wire has been received stating that the chairman and the clerk of the Wairoa County Council will be in attendance. Mr. Tait and others will appear on behalf of the Mohaka settlers A petition signed by 42 ratepayers from the Mohaka riding of the Wairoa County* has been forward ed to the chairman and members of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. It states: —(1) That your petitioners are all ratepayers in the Mohaka riding of the Wairoa County. (2) That owing to the position of our properties. Napier, the headquarters of the Hawke’s Bay County Council, *s the only outlet and port for shipment of everything produced by our lands. (3) That all our business transactions are done at Napier. (4) That the service road and only* service road available to a large number of your petitioners, is the Napier-Taupe road, maintained by and under control of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. (5) That the rates paid by us and collected by the Wairoa County Council, are not spent on the maintenance and up-keep of roads of service to us in connection with Napier. (6) That owing to the geographical pc sition of rhe portion of the Mohaka riding in which our lands are, it is much more con venient and more fitting and proper that such portion should be included in the Hawke’s Bay County' Council, and the construction and
I maintenance of all public works therein could be much more easily ; and more conveniently’ controlled, * and carried out by the Hawke’s j Bay County Council. (7) We therefore pray that the Hawke’s Bay * andWairoa County Councils should, by special order. »gree that that ; portion of the Mohaka riding described in the schedule hereto, r should be severed from the Wairoa I County and should be taken over ; and included in the Hawke’s Bay !
