HAWKE’S BAY REGATTA.

CONCLUDING RESULTS. During the afternoon on Saturday the attendance at the Hawke’s Bay Rowing Regatta increased considerably, a large number of ladies being present on the ground. Nevertheless, we feel sure that if the attractiveness of the meeting was fully known the attendance of both town and country residents would be considerably augmented. Be that as it may. Those who were present undoubtedly enjoyed themselves. The weather held fine

throughout the afternoon, and a light wind, without ruffling the sur i face of the harbour, enabled sai'i ing parties to cruise about an*i ( view the racing from the water. Towards the middle of the afternoon the scene was one of the ' most picturesque and animated which could be seen in the province. The course for all the shorter races runs parallel with the ' Napier-Petane road, and at times dozens of traps, motor cars, cyclists and pedestrians watched the start and followed the races to- ! wards the winning post at the C’hib pier. To seaward of the course i about 30 sailingcraft skimmed backwards and forwards,; their snowy sails gleaming in the sunshine, while a chorus of ‘’plop plop plops” announced the presence of motor i craft of all sizes. The pier was crowded with eager spectators, and the grounds of the Sailing C’hib were gay with colour and anima- ’ tion. The officials were Umpire. Mr. i A. C. Barnes; judge, Mr. J. Thomi son ; starter, Mr. A. Simmonds ; j starter’s steward, Mr. A’. E. Currie. They are to be congratulated upon • the conduct of the. gathering. J Races were got off well up to time. ! and the programme concluded ' without a hitch. With such a splendid course ■ there should be nothing to prevent . the Hawke's Bay regatta from being pushed into the front rank of I New Zealand meetings, and we j hope each year to chronicle ’ini provement. The concluding results are as t follows: — Junior Fours, 11 mile.—Star (Wallace, Brewer, F. Craig, Alex- : ander) 1, Union (M. Wiig, E. Miig, L. Shepherd and McVay) 2, Napier No. 1 (Cordingly, Lang, Martin and Hay) 3. Napier No. 2 and Petone did not start. There was a splendid start, and from the commencement Napier looked to be rowing strongly, but gradually Star got a lead, and rowing steadily and with evidence of * sound form, secured the victory from Union, who unfortunately collapsed within a few yards of home. The bowman of Napier lost hirf slide. Madden Pairs, 1 mile. —Napier ! (Robt. Cassidy and Robt. Puflett, jr.) 1, Union (G. Bartlett and F. Jull) 2. Even for about half way, then Napier drew ahead and won I by half a length. Maiden Fours (under 10st.), 1 . mile.—Aramoho (J. O’Keefe. R. Dewson. W. Guildford and D. Phillips) 1, Napier (A. Anderson, 'M. Slack, C. Spriggs and A. R. 1 Brew-jr) 2. Union (H. Wiffin, R. Lydfurd. A. Forsythe and Milgrew! 3. Aramoho won by a lengtl

easily. Junior Double Sculls. 1 mile. — Union (E. Arnold and H. E. Bourgeois) 1, Wellington (P. Davey and A. N. Mathiesvn) 2. (m’y starters. Won by two lengths. Senior Fours. 2 miles.—-Star (H. Wallace. D. Brewer. W. H. Brewer. and F. Alexander) 1. Napier (Cordingly. Martin. Lang. Hay) 2, Union (Forrest. E. M iig. B. M iig.

and Milgrew) 3. Star and I nion shot oil at the start, leaving Na-

pier some three lengths behind , this order was kept until neurit half way. where L nion dropped hack and Napier moved up a little. The finish was rather disappointinj:. Star passim: the post one h nuth and a half ahead of Napier, with Urioa. with a scratch crew in a ''clinker'’ boat, about a dozen lengths further back. Junior Pairs. 1 mile. —I nion No. 1 (Sheppard and McVay) 1. Union No. 2 (Bartlett and F. Jull) 2. Won easily. Owing to being in the previous lace. Napier were late in i getting to the post, and a start was ' made without them.
