H.B. COUNTY COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawke’s Bay County Council held its ordinary monthly meeting at 10.30 to-day. Present: Crs. Mason Chambers Clark, Shrimpton, Timson, Bennett, Stead, Donnelly, Crosse And Rathie.

On the motion of the Chairman it was decided to contribute £55 towards the Sanitary Inspection organisation.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 13th. Cost of filling in lagoon at Cliva Grange was estimated at £6O, and it was resolved to call tenders for the work.

Legal opinion is to be obtained as to the construction of culverts

on Saltwater Creek, Greenmeadows, one settler having refused to enlarge his culvert as requested.

Since last meeting he had seen Tuki Tuki settlers regarding the proposed bridge. The settlers would like a report on both the suspension and tressel bridge. It the cost of the tressel bridge was not too great the settlers wrcS® prefer it.—Engineer to report.

Some discussion took place an the request of Mr. J. N. Williams for the clearing of a drain near. Frimley. Cr. Crosse moved that the drain be 'cleaned, and Cr. Rathie seconded. Cr. Simson moved that a com- a mittee be set up to investigate the matter. —Cr. Bennett seconded. The amendment was put and lost, and the motion carried. On the motion o;f Mr.- Simson, Fernhill, Grange Beach, Pohue and Tongoio are to be added to the ’ist of polling places suggested for the Harbour Board election. Mr. J. V. Brown wrote asking the Council to subsidise a Government . grant of £3OO, by a County grant of £l5O, to fill in a lagoon at Westshore.—On the motion of Cr. Clarke the matter was left to the mover and Chairman.

A petition was received from Ma>raekakaho settlers asking that the grade on the Hampden road be improved.—The overseer to report r»n the request. ! TENDERS. Tenders for metalling were dealt with as follows: Clive, Davis, , accepted ; Raukawa, held over; Maraikakaho, left to chairman; Havelock, left to the chairman. OTHER MATTERS. On the motion of Cr. Crosse, the engineer is to be asked to report upon the drains affecting all county roads in the district.

The Railway Department will attend to railway crossings as requested by the Council. The Marine Department forwarded gazette notice re the harbour election. —Received. The Public Works Department wrote saying it cannot pass a grant for Richmond road. —Received. The Public Works Department said it would have no objection to the closing of a portion of the A war toto road. —Received, and Borough Council to be asked to pay cost of closing their portion of the road. The Treasury forwarded a preliminary' consent to a 10 per cent, payment on Napier South loan of £4621 (this brings the. amount up to £5000). —Received. The Lands and Survey Department stated that thirds can be used towards the cost of the Mangatahi bridge.—Received. Napier Borough Council wrote drawing the Council’s attention so certain insanitary conditions at Napier South. —Report to be obtained.

Napier High School Board of Governors wrote stating that the Council’s representative’s term of office (R. D. D. McLean) expires on March 31st. —Mr. McLean re-ap-poiuted.

The N.Z. Farmers’ Union Hastings Branch wrote forwarding copy of resolutions re collars on dogs. - Received.

Ashburton County Council forwarded information saying their traction engine by-laws do not provide for engines having spark catchers. —Received.

Taradale Town Board wrote asking permission to cut a drain in the county.—-Left to the chairman, with power to act. D. B. Hill wrote asking the Council to accept of dedication of road at Fernhill at once. He wished to have time to cope with the treeroots. He would give a guarantee to complete.—On report of the engineer, Mr. Hill is to be called on to pay such guarantee as may be required. Mr. F. Walsh wrote complaining of the state of Marakakaho-Hamp-den road. It was in a dangerous state and had been so for two or three years.—Received. Mr. .G. Boyd wrote asking the Council to extend the Mangaoh jtn<> road to the Rangitaiki river.—-Cr.

Donnelly moved and the Chairmani seconded, that Mr. Boyd be asked to send along the cheque for £l5O promised by applicant’s brother towards cost of road.—Carried. Mr. John Hildreth wrote complaining against charge by ranger when impounding his cow. Mr. Simeon said there were too many comptaunts. He moved that three months' notice be given the ranger. —Or. Stead seconded and the motion was carried. Mr. J. Tait wrote forwarding names of ratepayers who should be naked to attend the special meeting on the Wairoa Boundary question. —Received. Mr. T. H. Stewart wrote saying that he will lease road reserve cn which his house stands at Clive Grange. The hous«. was bought by him not knowing that it was on Council property. The Chairman said the house was not on the road but on a reCr. Simson thought it was hard on the man to shift his house. Cr. Donnelly suggested giving the man six or twelve months to shift the place. Cr. Rathies thought he would like to look into the matter. O. Shrimpton agreed with Mr People should not be allow'd to build on county reserve-. O:; the motion of the chairman, : <ied by Cr. Cranby and Co. wrote quirting price of 9 x 4 Jarrah tint ler.— Matter was left in the hands of the chairman. On the motion of Cr. Shrimpton. > attention is to be given to Korokipo and Dartmoor roads. » Cr. Stead drew attention to the fact that some yards, the property) of D. and A. McLean, at Bridge Pa, had been used by the public for some time, and had fallen into disrepair. He thought it a fair thing that the council should pay cost of repairs.—Overseer to report.
