A NARROW ESCAPE.
THE RAMMING OF THE RUAHINE. [per press association.] Wellington, March 13. Details of the ramming of rhe Ruahine, at Las Palmas, by the Houlder liner steamer, the Beacon Grange, show that the mishap occurred at 6.40 a.m. in broad daylight, while the Ruahine was anchored and coaling. There was a fresh wind with some swell, which prompted the master of the Beacon Grange to change anchorage and get into smoother water. She had to pass under the Ruahine s stern, but when nearing her, !he Beacon Grange lost steering wav. and at a critical moment the engines were put full ahead, and she struck the Ruahine on the starboard quarter. The impact caused the RnahLte to give a sudden momentary list to port and though there was no panic, passengers came rushing tn deck. The Beason Grange backed away and went inside the breakwater to anchor with bows considerably damaged above waterline. She had cut into the Ruahine a distance of five feet wide, about ninef eet above the water-line. After journeying five days and nights, temporary repairs were rf-j fected and the Ruahine arrived I here only four days late.
