The House of Commons was crowded to hear Sir Wilfrid Laurier in defence of the reciprocity agreement. He asserted that Canada’s trade would certainly benefit therefrom. He ridiculed the possibility of annexation by the United States, asserting that Canada was sufficiently satisfied with her place within the Empire, and desired to maintain it. He hoped that peace would ever exist between Great Britain and the United States.

Canadian reciprocity would aid to-

wards such an end.
