THE ERA OF STRIKES.
"There never has been a time since I can remember,” said Mr. Garland, M.L.C., at Hornsby, N.S.W., "or that the oldest man can remember when we have suffered from more industrial upheavals and more industrial unrest than we have during the period that the present Administration has been in power. Look at the newspapers day by day, and can you ever take up one without you see one, two, or three strikes going on ? At the present time there is a big strike in Victoria, and an enormous upheaval at Lithgow, and a strike at the Sulphide Corporation works. And, strange to say, Mr. Griffith (the Minister for Public Works) has a strike in hand on the Moree-Mun-gindi railway line, or rather he was threatened with one. (Laughter.) It points out that this daylabour system, which was going to bring blessing and prosperity to the land, recently seems to have run on to a snag. It turns out that the men who are getting 12/- a day demand 15/-. They have been offered 13not a bad rise, but they are not taking any, and are out for 15/-.”
