RIFLE SHOOTING
NAPIER GUARDS.
The Napier Guards spent a very interesting afternoon at the Rifle Range on Saturday, when the following competitions were decided : 1. The Championship Belt Competition. 2. The Junior Cup Competition. 3. The Palmerston Guards’ Cup Competition. The competition for Major Ringland’s trophy was also commenced. This competition is to consist of two matches at 200, 500, and 600 yards, with the usual conditions, of 7 shots and a sighter at each range. The handicaps were arranged by Sergeant F. C. Kennedy. Following are leading scores: — MAJOR RINGLAND’S TROPHY.
scores in the competition for the Championship Belt, consisting of the best two out of three matches in each of the following competi tions: — 1. Forsyth Shield. 2. H. J. Grieve’s Trophy. 3. Palmerston Guards’ Cup.
The scores of Sergeant Head and Private Maidens were effected by the fact that they did not compete in all the matches.. The Forsyth Shield and Mr. H. J. Grieve’s trophy were won by Sergeant James, and in the shoot off for the Palmerston Cup between Sergeant James and Private F. Morgan the latter was successful. The leading scores in the Palmerston Guards Cup competition ate as follows, the conditions being the best two out of three matches:
The result of the Junior Cup competition (which consisted of the best two out of the matches in the same competitions as for the Championship Belt, and also the ten final shots at 600 with handicaps as ar ranged by Sergeant F. C.Kennedy) is as follows:— - i Pvt. E. Dunn.. 163 182 185 44—579 Pvt. Warnock * 168 181 186 41 —576 Pvt. Harris .. 173 183 179 39—574 Pvt. Sandilands 160 187 172 35 —554 Before the final 10 shots were fired the three first named had' scored exactly the same number of points, viz., 535, and in the shootoff Private E. Dunn was successful,, winning by the narrow margin of three points on Private Warnock, and five points on Private Harris.
TRENTHAM TEAM.
The following team has been picked to represent the Napier Guards at Trentham this week to defend the New Zealand Championship Shield, won by the companylast year :—Sgts. James, Kennedy, Head; Pvts. Maidens, Morgan and Harris.
