TRAMWAYS FOR HASTINGS.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE COUNCIL.

The Committee appointed by the Hastings Borough Council to go into the question of a tramway service for Hastings met last even- | ing. Present: His Worship the I Mayor (Mr. J. A. Miller)," Crs. j Hart, Styles, Donovan, and Garnett.

I On the motion of Cr. Styles, it j was decided to recommend to the ; Council as follows:—

That offers be called from private syndicates, to lay trams in Hastings; the Council to consider each offer on its merits, and to select one for the approval of the ratepayers ; a poll of the ratepayers then to be taken on the question of haying Municipal Tramways or accepting the syndicate’s offer recommended by the Council. In the event of a syndicate offering to construct and run a tram service, the committee recommends that the terms be on the following basis

(1) Right for 10 years from date of running of cars. ( (2) The work of construction to ■be commenced within six months j after the right is given to a syndicate. In the event of the work not being started within the time stat|ed the deposit to be forfeited; the 1 deposit to be, say, £3OO. (3) The whole work to be completed within 12 months; the Council to have the right to take over the whole of the land, buildings, works and plant at valuation at the end of 10 years, or any year after by giving 12 months’ notice of their intention to do so.

(4) The successful syndicate not to be allowed the right to transfer their interest to anyone else without obtaining the sanction of the Council.

The recommendations will be considered at the next meeting of the Council.
