Rev. Jas. Ings, lately of London, but a native of Dunedin, has accepted the pastorate of Ashburton Baptist Church. Mr. A. L. D. Fraser, J.P., presided at the Hastings Police Court this morning, when Fanny Preston was charged with (1) being found drunk in Grove Road, Hastings, on February 22nd, and (2) with being found drunk during the currency of a prohibition order. Constable Murray applied for a remand till to-morrow, which was granted. Yesterday afternoon an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Cleaver, who died suddenly the previous evening, was held by Mr. S. E-. McCarthy, District Coroner. Dr. Barcroft, who conducted a post mortem examination of the body, gave evidence that death was due to fatty degeneration of the' heart, and a verdict was returned | in accordance with the medical testimony.

Yesterday’s outbreak of fire at the rear of Flynn’s Hotel, Hastings, originated in a shed used as a storeroom, and the building being a very old one, the flames spread with great rapidity to the sample rooms on one side and a stable on the other. The damage to Mr. Flynn’s stock is estimated a*t from £l5 to £2O, and is covered by a policy in the Atlas office. The sample rooms were occupied by the representative of H. J. Jones and Sons, of Wanganui, and the stock, the whole of which was practically saved, thanks to the efforts of the Hastings Fire Police and willing was insured for £l5O. The origin of the fire is unknown.

1 A very old and highly ‘ respected > resident of Hastings in the person [ of Mrs. Horne, wife of Mr. Thomas Horne, the well-known contractor, passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W. Stone, in Avenue Road, at 5.30 this morning. Tha deceased ; s health broke down sdSne time ago, consequent on the death of her son, and though there had been an improvement of late, the end was not unexpected. The late Mrs. Horne was 63 years of age, and the greater part of her life had been spent in this district. She was an ardent member of the Wesleyan congregation, and a keen worker on behalf of the church. Four sons and two daughters (all grown up), besides a number of grandchildren, are left to mourn their loss.
