LEGISLATIVE XMAS DAY.
A JUDGMENT AT THE THAMES. Thames, Feb. 20. In the case wherein a man was charged with an offence against the Licensing Act by being found on licensed premises on December 26th. which the Legislature had decreed should be considered Christmas Day, Magistrate Burgess held the offence proved. In a lengthy judgment he quoted many authorities which said when words admit of but one meaning, as in the present Court, he is not at liberty to speculate on the intention of the Legislature to depart from the rctual meaning of the words of the; Act. That was not to construe it,i but to alter it. The defendants were convicted.
