MAHORA DRAINAGE
MEETINGS OF SETTLERS.
A representative meeting of set-, tiers was held at Mahora yesterday, for the purpose of discussing drainage matters. The meeting was held at Mr. Purvis’ residence, and in addition to the settlers interested, Mr. Mason Chambers (chairman of the Hawke’s Bay County Council), Or. Crosse, and Mr. D. McMillan (district engineer) attended. After discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Pimley, seconded by Mr; Purvis, to adopt the scheme of drainage as suggested by Mr. McMillan. Briefly, the scheme suggested is to divert the water from Karamu, Frimley, and Mahora into the old bed of the Ngarororo river at a point about 20 drains below the Maraekakaho road crossing. About 50 chains of new drain will be required, the old river-bed will require cleaning up for distance of 30 or 40 chains, and the present drain will require widening for a distance of about one and a half miles.
The cost of this work will probably run into four figures, and the question of finance is now being considered. As the majority of the settlers interested are Crown tenants, a hope is expressed that generous Government assistance will be forthcoming. The granting of a Government subsidy would materially help in putting into operation a very necessary scheme to secure safety from floods.
