DEEDS THAT ARE DARK.

| A WOMAN’S ALLEGATIONS. Auckland, Feb. 13. An affiliation case heard at the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr. Kettle, S.M., this afternoon, presented some sensational features. Pattie Keyle, an unmarried woman of Auckland, sought to obtain a maintenance order against Charles Coakes, alleging him to be the father of her child. After she had given her evidence and the defendant was in the box the Magistrate asked the latter to look straight into the woman’s face and deny that he was the father of the child. He did so, and the plaintiff hysterically exclaimed: “Now I will tell the truth about it all.” Later she was recalled, and alleged that the defendant, in company with another man. took her to a woman in Ponsonby. who performed an illegal operation, for which the sum of £5 was paid. The operation, she said, was successful, but later the defendant got her into similar trouble, culminating in the present case. She did not intend to bring the allegation, but the denials of defendant made here do so. The defendant, recalled, emphatically denied the charge, and the case was adjourned, His Worship stating that thorough investigation into the matter was necessary.
