AN EXEMPLARY FINE.
SEQUEL TO AN ACCIDENT. At the Hastings Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Messrs* C. Hughes and J. E. Hall, J’s.P,„ William Holmes, who did not appear, -was charged with riding a motor bicycle in a manner dangerous to the public, in St. Aubyn street, Hastings, on May 14th, 1910. Detective Butler, in outlining the
facts of the case, said that on the date shown in the information, a Mrs. Schrodski was walking in the*, direction of Miss Hodge’s school in St. Aubyn street, and was carrying; a child in her arms, and leading another by the hand. Defendant
came up from behind on his motor bicycle, travelling at a furious pace, and when within a few yards of the woman he sounded his horn. Mrs. Schrodski stepped aside to avoid the bicycle, but was run over. Holmes had left the district shortly after the accident, and had recently been located in the Wanganui district, where the summons was served. Florence Schrodski gave evidence on the lines indicated by Detective Butler. The coat (produced) which she was wearing at the time of the accident, was torn as a result. Constable Lefevre deposed that he saw accused the day after the occurrence. Holmes admitted running over the woman, stating that he was travelling at the rate ef about nine miles an hour. Accused gave a fictitious name, and subsequently left the district. The Bench said the offence was a very serious one, and they would inflict a substantial penalty as a .■naming to others. Accused was fined £5, with costs 15/-.
