EXCLUSION OF THE FIT.
MAYOR OF AUCKLAND’S POSITION. HE CLINGS TO THE CHAIR: LIKE A MUSTARD PLAS- i TER.” ! [per press association.] Auckland, Feb. 10, An acrimonious debate took place at the Auckland City Council last night, with regard to the dual position occupied by Mr. Bagnal, as < Mayor of the borough and directori of the New Zealand Insurance Co. •
The Company wrote cancelling i the Council’s policy and enclosed ai cheque representing the premiums of unexpired balance of policy. < Mr. Neherney said he regarded this as an insult to the ratepayers: and regretted the Mayor had so far forgotten what was due to his posi-i tion as to allow a policy to be cancelled, rather than give up his position as director or resign the: Mayoralty. He was clinging to the , position like a mustard plaster, which was not in accord with the j dignity of the Mayoral office. The Mayor said the Insurance Company’s previous reasonable: proposal to transfer the policy to ; the South British, had not been entertained, consequently it had taken the present- reasonable course.
Mr. Entrican said a set was being made to put a certain, gentleman in the Mayoral chair ana give him certain prominence at the next election. A motion that the letter be received was carried by 8 to 7 on the Mayor’s casting vote. An after amendment was moved by Mr. Neherney, reflecting on the action of the Mayor, but this was ruled out of order by Mr. Bagnal.
