N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING

BRICE LOWERS THE 100 YARDS RECORD. Wellington, Feb. 8. The second day of the New' Zealand swimming championships was favoured by fine weather, though the water was cold. C. Brice in the teams race reduced the New Zealand record (his own) to 62 3-ssec, this being the only record broken.

Champion won the 440yds championship with the greatest ease in smin 58sec, four seconds outside the record.

Canterbury A and Wellington B tied in the water polo, each scoring a goal.

Owing to their men being engaged in other events, the Canterbury team did not start in the teams race. The 50yds scratch race provided a fine contest and was won by C. Brice by a touch. Results 100yds Handicap.—E. Jenkinson (6sec) and B. Wood (13sec) dead heat 1, T. H. McLean (14sec) 3. Times: Jenkinson 69 l-ssec, Wood 76 l-ssec.

sQyds Scratch Race. First heat: C. Brice (Wellington) 1, F. Bridges (Napier) 2, C. V. Fordham (Wellington) 3. Also started: P. V. Mason (Canterbury). Brice swam at a great pace and won, slowing down, by about half a yard in 28 l-ssec. Second heat: A. O’Hare (Auckland) 1, G. Seymour (Napier) 2. Also started: J. D. Stewart (Auckland), R. Nelson (Wellington), J. Grant (Hawera). Won by a narrow margin. Time, 29 2-ssec. Third heat: F. Roberts (Wellington) 1, M. C. Stranger (Wellington) 2, G. L. Bull (Canterbury) 3. Also started: C. Kelly (Wellington). Time. 29sec. Final: C. Brice I, F. Roberts 2, F. Bridges 3. Won by two feet, a foot between second and third. Time, 27 4-ssec.

220yds Breast-stroke Championship.—C. Atkinson (Canterbury) 1, W. Cookson (Canterbury) 2, N. McCartney (Napier) 3. Also started : W. R. Horton (Auskland), W. B. Jerron (Auckland) and G. L. Bull (Canterbury). Atkinson went to the front from the start and at the first lap was slightly in front of McCartney, who was swimming strongly. The Napier man proved more adept at turning and drew up level. Cookson, who was swimming on the extreme length of the field, was well up. third. When 150 yards had been covered Atkinson was a couple of yards to the good and Cookson was up level with McCartney. Atkinson gradually drew away and won by nearly four yards. McCartney was a yard further further bark. .Terrain was fourth. Horton fifth and Bidl sixth. Time 3min. 17 4-5 sec. Cookson’s time was 3inin. 22 2-ssec. and McCartney's 3min. 27 3-ssec. Only the placed men got under the standard time. 200yds Open Handicap.— A. M. Smith (ISsee.) 1. K. Forth (2Ssec.)

440yds Championship.—M. E. Champion (Auckland) 1, C. Nelson (Auckland) 2, R. Healy (Wellington) 3. Also started: C. Atkinson (Canterbury), E. J. Dawson (Dunedin). B. C. Freyberg (Wellington), J. Grant (Hawera), A. McMillan (Dunedin), C. H. H. Rich( Canterbury), P. Schwartz (Canterbury), F. Seymouh and G. Seymour (Napier). After two false starts the competitors got away well together. Champion and Freyberg showed the way over the first 100 yards, thrown behind in 69sec. Champion and Freyberg were still together at 150 yards, but Freyberg then dropped back and was never again conspicuous. At 300 yards Champion was three or four yards in front. Nelson being second. Next came Healy and F. Seymour, swimming stroke for stroke. Champion finally won by about three yards from Nelson, who beat Healy by five yards. The time was sinin. 58 sec. Dawson and Grant gave up at 200 yards.

500yds Flying Squadron Championship. -Wellington (C. Brice, B. C. Freyberg. R. Healy, F. Roberts ami F. C. Stranger)!, Auckland (M. E. Champion. A. O’Hare, H. Purdy. J. D. Stewart and C. Wilson) 2. Canterbury did not start. The race between Champion and Brice (last men of each team) was the best of the meeting. Brice winning by a touch. Time, smin. 27 l-ssec.

Water Polo. —Canterbury A and Wellington B played a drawn game one goal each. Wiggins scored for Wellington and Atkinson for Canterbury.
