GISBORNE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MAYOR AND COUNCIL AT

LOGGERHEADS.

Gisborne, Feb. 9. Proceedings at the Borough Council meeting last night were of a lively nature, the meeting extending until 2.30 a.m. The Mayor complained that the instructions of the consulting engineer, Mr. Marchant, were not being carried out in a proper manner and as Councillors had defined, by the local engineer. After a discussion, which was at times acrimonious, on a motion of censure against the Mayor, an amendment was carried by 5 tn 1, “That this Council- affirms its continued faith in the ability of its engineer and that it does not desire to hear any further criticisms of the engineer from his Worship the Mayor." The Mayor voted in the negative. The mover and seconder of the original motion and two other Councillors did not vote on the amendment.
