At the opening of the Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Cooper complimented Palmerston on the light calendar.

Ernest A. Hamilton, ag«d 18. who pleaded guilty to attempted rape on a girl of 14 at Foxton Beach road, was sentenced to not less than five voars’ reformatory im-

prisonment. In the case of Wilson Howard, al leged theft of a sheep dog. the jury found the accused guilty of detaining the dog knowing it to have been stolen, but there was no evidence to show how he came by it. Hi.* Honour reserved various matters in connection with the case for th'* Court of Appeal. William Lain eford Howard and John Joseph Herbert Rush were indicted on three counts. (I) assault md nJiheiv. (2, theft from the person. and (3) theft. The charge was of e’lttinc out the trousrr pocket from an old man named Alex. McMaster while he slept in his room at th*' Arcadia Hotel. Feilding. Considerable e\ idence by the landlady, waitresses and others was given, aLgedly connecting the accused with the theft, but the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
