ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.
NOT QUESTION OF JUSTICE. BUT SECURITY. {PER press ASSOCIATION.] Wellington. Feb. 4. The Superintendent of the Advances to Settlers Office takes exception to Mr. Ellingham’s statement made yesterday at a meeting of the Land Board. In referring to the troubles of the back-blocks settlers, Mr. Ellingham said. “There was no doubt that settlers were not getting justice from the department.” “It is.” says the Superintend■ent, “ a question of security, not of justice. Obviously, if the settler is asking for relief and talking of abandoning his holding on account of excessive rent and taxes, as Mr. Ellinghain states is frequently the case, his holding is valueless as security. The department is anxious to help settlers, and is doing so to the extent of many thousands every week, but it cannot advance a penny if the security required by Statute is not offered.”
