The wool sales to-day included Waikohu, top price lOd, average 9d; Elderslie, top price 1/81, average 1/B|.
KEEN COMPETITION.

At the wool sales there was good competition, prices generally being maintained.
TILBURY RAILWAY. London, Feb. 3. The railway absorption gives the Tilbury company’s ordinary stockholders a perpetual 6 per cent, interest. A feature ot the transaction on the Stock Exchange is the rise of Tilbury ordinary shares from 129/- to 147/-. The general opinion is that unless the Great Eastern Company has received a very valuable consideration the absorption will be strongly opposed in Parliament. BANK OF ENGLAND RETURNS (Received 4, 8.30 a.m.) Bank of England gold coin is £35,453,000. Reserve, £27,216,000. Proportion of reserves to liabilities, 51.49. Circulation, £27,701,000. Public deposits, £10,953,000. Other eposits, £41,867,000. Government securities, £14,905,000.
Other securities, £28,808,000. Short loans, 3| per cent. Three months bills, 2 7-16 per cent.
Paris, 2f per cent. Berlin, 3| per cent. Bank rate, 4 per cent. CONSOLS AND STOCKS.

SUGAR. German, 9/1 ; first marks, 11/1. WOOL MARKETS.
Bradford wool market is quiet; 64’s 2/2, super 60’s 2/l|, common 60’s 2/Of. 56’s 1/9J, 50’s 1/6|, 46’s l/2f, 40’s 1/1-i. WHEAT AND. FLOUR. The wheat markets are dulL River Plate, India, Australia are all pressing sales. The only inquiry for near wheat is by buyers who are continuing hand-to-mouth, policy. Australian cargoes sold for 35/4| and 35/3. Holders are asking 35/3 for January and February shipments, sailers' 35/6, steamers 34/3 were paid. For January, February, March parcels there is small demand; Australian spot at 35/9,5. 35/3; Best New Zealand 33/- and 34/-; inferior 32/- and 32/6. New/ crop parcels, February shipment, are quoted at 32/6. The flour market is quiet, small business being done in Australian patents store -at 25/6, February and March shipments 24/- and 24/3.
CEREALS. Oats, quiet. New Zealand prices unchanged. La Plata, Feb-ruary-March shipment, 13/-. BUTTER AND CHEESE. The butter market is seedy, prices generally unchanged. Choicest Australian, salted, occasionally 104/-. .New Zealand, unsalted, 108/- to 110/-.
This week’s Colonial arrivals were 120,000 boxes, next week’s will be 130,000 boxes.
Cheese is firm. New Zealand" coloured, 59/- to 61/-. Australian white, 56/- to 57/- ; coloured, 58/-.
WELLINGTON WOOL SALES. [PER PP.ES3 ASSOCIATION. J Wellington, Feb. 4. The number of bales catalogued for Wellington wool sales next Tuesday is 12,700, as compared, with 16.358 in February last year.
