It is reported that farmers are complaining bitterly of the damage ; caused to roads by traction en-1 gines. It is [minted out that not I only are the roads badly cut up, but serious grass fires are caused . by sparks from tlie engines. A re- ( .-’dent of the Puketii iri road states that lie saw one engine start no less than eight fires in this way. This morning a representative <>l the* "Tribune” spoke to Mr. Fergusson. Coi’V'V (' ! erb. r - ;1 the matter, and' he pointed out that the Council did not know if it had power to deal I with the matter. Such by-laws as. did regulate the engine traffic I would be enforced as notified by I circular to engine owners some timej ago. but the Council would have to' take legal opinion as to what could 1 be done regarding the smoke stacks. He. however, pointed out' that any settier would have a re-' medy at common law if he could prove that a particular engine set; fire to his property. • Mr. Sorenson, coach builder. ; Hastings, advertises two now Bur- I lington trading carts, slightly shop- | soiled, and being sacrificed to make . room for new stock.
