MR L. E. COTTERILL’S DEATH

HOW THE FATALITY OCCURRED.

On Thursday we published the sad news of the death of Mr. L. E. Cotteriil. which occurred the previous night a- a result of an accident. T:i*‘ " Poverty Bay Herald ” reports the painful event as follows :- -

It appears that deceased had been assisting to cut a crop of oats, and at the close of the day

the draught horses were left where the men knocked off work. Deceased was carrying a bundle of oats, and one of the horses, which had its blinkers on. got a fright at the noise of the rustling of the oats, and lashed out, kicking Mr. Cotteriil on the stomach. Mr. G. F. Powell rendered valuable first aid and skilled assistance until the arrival of Dr. Davis, of Waipiro, who was telephoned for. Deceased was quite conscious up till yesterday morning, when lie lapsed into unconsciousness. He had. however. described to the doctor and others present the w hole of the circumstances. and the coroner decided that an inquest was unneces sary.

Deceased, who was a son of th»' Rev. Canon Cotteriil. of Christ church, and a brother «»f Mr. A. J. Cotteriil. of Cotteriil and Humphreysfi solicitors. Napier, was one of the pioneer settlers of the East Coast, having been resident in the Waiapu district for nearly 25 years. He was held in the highest esteem by the people of Waiapu and by a wide circle of friends in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. Deceased was a member of the Waiapu County Council, and took a prominent part in all local affairs. He was one of the best cricketers on the East Coast. He leaves a wife and three children, for whom great sympathy is felt. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, at the new cemetery. Tokomaru. the Rev. Mr. Wilson officiating at the graveside. Only a few months ago another well-known Waiapu settler, in the person of Mr. Durrant, met with his death in a similar manner as the result of a kick bv a calf.
