Adelaide, Jan. 11.
The test match was resumed in cool, windy weather. The attendance was 3000. The wicket was wearing fairly, but there were son c patches which are likely to degenerate.
Six minutes ended the Australian innings. Cotter was neatly caught in the slip without atay addition to the total, and Whitty was snapped • at the wickets. Meanwhile Trum-; per added half a dozen, including a • fouree off, Sinclair, thus eclipsing 1 Murdoch’s 211 as the individual ; Australian best record in a test; match. He batted chancelessly for ■ 242 minutes and hit 26 fours, lhe ' whole innings lasted 350 minutes. South Africa opened with Zulch and Sherwell against Whitty aiid i Cotter. Whitty’s second over got . Sherwell again leg before—l for 10. Faulkner began well, but at 29 lost , Zulch, Carter jumping to leg side and taking a brilliant catch. Nourse : was next. The bowling was chang-: ed frequently before luncheon, I when the total was 54, Faulkner 2, Nourse 12. Against Cotter and Whitty. after resumption of play, runs came slowly. Neither of the bastmen displayed agressiveness. Armstrong relieved Cotter at 77 a d Kelleway went on for Whitty at 84. The score crept .along at a funeral pace. The century occupied 117 minutes. With 6 added Nourse was caught in the slips. He batted s 93 minutes. Stricker was next. Faulkner completed 50 in 133 min- , utes. Macartney relieved Armstrong and immediately bowled Stricker and a fine fast ball —4 for 119. Before tea Faulkner made, some nice strokes. At the adjournment the score was 137, Faulkner 66, Llewellyn 2. Cotter and Whitty bowled after tea. The former v.as expensive. Llewellyn getting two fours, and 29 was scored in 25 minutes. Armstrong relieved Cotter at 166 and Kelleway took Whitty’s place at 179. The batting v. as fearfully slow.* Faulkner made cne good hit to boundary off Kelleway and then hit a long hop from Armstrong for a quartette. A leg glance in the same over made Faulkner 100 for 206 minutes’ play and the total 200 for 215 minutes. Whitty and Cotter were given trial with a new ball. Faulkner hit a full toss from Whitty for four, but (.’otter’s first was a wide. The bats men were patience personified and scarcely attempted a forcing hit. Macartney was tried and Whitty changed ends. The latter’s first over saw Faulkner caught in the slips. The African crack batted 236 minutes in very sound though defensive style. He was always rttractive. with good strokes all round. Only mice he lifted .the ball. He hit ten fours—s for 228. Llew ellyn and Pegler played out time. Llewellyn had been in 118 minut' s. The innings occupied 256 minutes. The batting was painfully slow. i lacking enterprise. The fielding was brilliant, particularly Maeartney and Ransford. Whitty bowled j best and took three wickets for i 67. Cotter was harmless as the ! ■wicket played too slow. Scores:—
