THE BLACK HAND"

DEATH AND DESTRUCTION THREATENED.

New York, Jan. 1.

The 11 Black Hand " gangs in this city, who have been responsible for several outrages of late, are now doing their best to terrorise the authorities. The Commissioner of Police and a number of the high officials in the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police Bureau have received threatening letters by the score.

These missives have been couched in the usual terms, one containing the intimation that unless the vigilance that the officers are displaying in ferreting out the criminals who were responsible for the recent bomb throwings is relaxed, the central bureau will be blown up.

Individual officers have been promised death by knife or pistol, and extra vigilance is being displayed by the police generally.
