PROPOSED MUNICIPAL ORCHESTRA.
• The movement on foot to establish 1 a municipal orchestra in Napier j has advanced one more stage this f week. In accordance with the decision arrived at by the Borough I Council some weeks ago, the pub- ! lie are invited to give assistance. ! The Town Clerk advertises as fol- ! lows :— I ‘'The Napier Borough Council ; having been approached to sub sidise funds for a Municipal Orchestra, respectfully request that persons willing to assist in | the formation of same, either by f contributing towards the funds or I guaranteeing an amount, will ■ communicate with the under- ! signed." I By thus publicly inviting assist- ' ance, the local body is fulfilling the J letter of its agreement with the i promoters of the movement, but i it is assuredly necessary that those interested in the formation of the orchestra should do a little genuine hustling. The hare formal invitation of the Town Clerk to coni tribute money is not sufficient to J loosen the purse-strings of our * wealthy residents. Thefe must be j some organisation to direct the | movement, and a great deal of en- ! thusiasm anti energy put into the i promotion work. There are in ■ Napier many well-to-do people fond i of good music, who would, we feel sure, he winning to help to secure the establisment of the orchestra, but they ne°d approaching by persons who can place a definite scheme before them, and give J reasonable assurance of success.
