THE PRICE OF TIMBER. DETERRENT TO BUILDING. [ter press association.] I Auckland, Dec. 21. The advance in the price of timber is estimated to represent an increase of £3O in the cost of an average five-roomed house, which with the high price of land and the high price of labour, tends as a deterrent to the building trade. First-class timber has advanced 6/per 100 feet within three years. The sawmillers attribute this last advance mainly to the Conciliation Court award, also to the scarcity of timber, the difficulty of getting it from a remote part of the bush, the strong demand from England for high-grade kauri, and the increased rentals of water-front properties.
