NEW YORK TRAGEDY.
GAS TANKS EXPLODE. GHASTLY DETAILS’. New York. Dec. 20. An explosion occurred in the city through t] 1(? igniting of gas tanks and dynamite. As a result, 125 persons were injured, several fatally, and 98 admitted to the hospital. The accident is due to a train of empty cars wrecking a gaspipe at the tear of a buffer stop. The gas accumulated ami exploded by an accidental electric spark. A trolly car and automobile were hurled together by the force of the explosion, and four of the latter’s passengers killed instantly. A stenographer was ' speared through the head by a flying timer joist. A policeman was leading twat girls across the street. Otic wasil torn from his hand and hurled yards away. The other's leg was cut off by flying iron. The fables of the teachers’-train-school were spotted with blood blown up from the street. Babies were thing out of the baths in the babies' home in the vicinty of the explosion. Thousands of windows were wrecked. The firehouse collapsed, and the power-house was wrecked, and the cars smashed. The damage will probably exceed a quarter of a million sterling. (Received 21. 10.30 a.m.) New York. Dec. 20. The total death roll by the New York explosion has reached eleven. The loss is estimated at L'loo.ooo.
