RELIGIOUS STRIFE.
MOSLEM v. HINDU. A SERIOUS RIOT. Calcutta, Dec. 10. In connection with the trouble between Hindoos and Marwaris, the former rescued a cow from a Mahommedan butcher’s shop. A riot ensued and 150 Hindoos were badly injured. The Hindoos thereupon, suspending operations, j t.ralysed the jute trade as a protest against the cow-killing dr bakried feast. The Bengal Government issued notices not to permit interference with Moslem rites. further rioting occurring, two companies of the rifle brigade, with a Maxim and a squadron of lancers, were summoned. The arrival of the military failed to deter the mob, which attempted to break their lines. The police then charged and a large number of rioters were wounded, others fled. Crowds arcnow gathering in the Burra bazaar. The Mahommedans looted the Hindoo shops.
