THE AUSTRALIAN DESTROYERS. ARRIVAL AT MELBOURNE. Melbourne. Dec. 11. A large and enthusiastic gathering welcomed the destroyers Parramata and Yarra. Lord Dudley said it was a great r 'lay for Australia. Some peoaie thought Australia should continue .paying a naval subsidy to Great Britain. He was not of :uat opinion. Australia could well do her share towards protecting the Empire. He was sure that the same- spirit which had made Great. Britain the greatest maritime .power the world had ever known, •animated Australians. Mr. Hughes said he was certain that the people would appreciate the action taken P»y the Government. The people recognised that ■it was not wise to live in a fool’s paradise. The world did not stand, -always at peace with a pen behind its ear and a Bible on its lap. Australians would appreciate the axiom that to secure peace they must prepare for war. A BRAZILIAN MUTINY.
.200 MUTINEERS KILLED AND WOUNDED. Rio De Jamerc Dec. 10. As a result of trivial grievances a of marines stationed at the naval barracks on the Island of Descobras near the citv, mutinied. The crew of the scout ship Rio Grande do Sul supported the marines in revolt. The scouts men were quickly suppressed after a number of the crew, including an officer, had been killed. The other warships vigorously cannonaded the island for four hours, when the mutineers asked for an armistice for the purpose of removing their dead. A heavy bombardment was reHumed after half an hour. All the chore batteries concentrated their fire on the island and the mutineers replied, killing and wounding many in the city. ~ The mutiny was and the revolutionary party partly annihilated. The killed and wounded exceed 200.
The Senate passed a proposal declaring a state of siege for 30 days.
