The character of the house where the affair took place is notorious; it is tenanted by native women, and is understood to belong to a " respectable " citizen. The Bank of' New Zealand selected a site for a branch about a mohth ago, intending I believe to await the erection of the building before coming here, but an old commercial resident felt moved to have a Bank at once, and the upshot of his endeavors was the complete demolishing of his once comfortable front parlor last Monday into an office, for the immediate occuption of a rival Bank, when to his discomfiture and also of the manager of the said Bank there appeared upon the ground oil Friday morning, Mr Russell and Mr Hill representing the Bank of New Zealand, who took possession with a table and two chairs, of a vacant house, and affixed a notice that this was the "Bank of New Zealand," and that they were ready to commence business—(Our old commercial resident's front parlor will not be ready for a few days). This little race has been a source of much amusement in the township, owing to the secrecy of each of the contending parties, and certainly scores one to the Bank of New Zealand.—A company is being floated here to erect a Public Hall, in sixty shares at £5 each. This is one of the many things we much need, as there is no place at present, where any amusement can be held—it is further considered by the promoters to-be a speculation that will return a good interest.—The, ketches Sarah and Mary and the Mary Ellen, have cleared from the wharf timber laden.
