Customs Receipts.—The total receipts at the Custom House, Port Ahuriri, during the year 1870, including fees under Merchant Shipping Act, Arms Act, &c, amounted to £27,458 3s Bd, from which has to be deducted the amount of refunded duties —<£113 3s 10, leaving a total of £27,344 19s lOd. The total receipts for the quarter ending 31st December (exclusive of £3 8s 9d refund) amount to .£6,340 7s 2d; and the total receipts for the month of December (exclusiue of £3 3s 9d refund) amount to £2,344 9s lid. A New recently had an opportunity of inspepting a sample of the soap produced at the newly-established soap and candle iranufactory of Messrs. Neal and Close, of this town. So far as we are able to judge of such matters, the article appears to be of a most excellent quality, and in all respects equal to the best imported. We should say that it bids fair to compete successfully with the imported article, and to command the local market. We trust that ihe sue cess of this enterprise will be such as to act as an inducement for the establishment of other manufactories of a kindred nature. Post Office Regulation.—ln consequence of the increasing difficulties which attend the transmission through France of overland mails addressed via Marseilles, the Postmaster General of London has determined on sending mails so addressed, until further notice, via Brindisi, Brenner, Prussia, and Belgium. The rates of postage to be charged in New Zealand on correspondence for the United Kingdom via Marseilles or Brindisi will therefore be as follows :—Letters : Not exceeding ceeding loz, 28 6d; exceeding loz and not exceeding l|oz, 3s 9d; and fo on, Is 3d for every |oz or fraction of |oz. Newspapers: Under 4oz, 4d. Book and pattern paicels : Not exceeding loz, 2d ; exceeding loz and not exceeding 2oz, 4d j exceeding 2oz and not exceeding 4oz, 7d; exceeding 4oz and not exceeding Boz, Is 2d; and so on, at the rate of Is 2d per half-pound.
