THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

The Nelson Examiner in reviewing the strength and disposition of the opposing political forces in the General Assembly makes the following remarks on the coming campaign:— The stability of the Fox Government will depend greatly on its finance. We believe there is no anxious desire on the part of the Opposition to take office, and unless the financial state of the Colony is much worse than Mr Fox asserts, his Government will probably be suffered to see out the present Parliament, which necessarily expires at the end of the present year. Although Mr Fox, within the last few weeks, has addressed public meetings both at Dunedin and Christchurch, he has been excedingly reticent on the policy his Government has in view. There has been a strong belief abroad that Government are desiious of entering on a large scheme of immigration and public works for the Colony, but if Ministers had come to any der cision on so important a subject, Mr Fox would have dropped some hint of it at one or other of the meetings he has lately attended. Instead, however, of leaving it to be supposedMinisters were engaged in maturing a great scheme which would benefit all parts of the Colony alike, he spoke only of one for the North Island, and endeavored to make his audience at Christchurch believe this could be carried out without cost to the Middle Island. As the scalded child dreads the fire, so will the Middle Island representatives be found reluctant to sanction a loan for Noitk Island works, on the pretence that it shall be a North Island cnarge. The breach of faith of a former understanding of a similar nature will serve as a sufhcient caution for the future.
