Commercial Intelligence.

~ WELLINGTON. We take the following from the Wellington Inde^ pendent, 6th February : The leading feature in this week's transaction has been the sudden doman d for Wellington corned butter for shipment to Melbourne, where;, as was suggested in our last report, it was probable that the excessive drought that had prevailed would be likely to cause a scarcity of this article. Every keg that could be secured has been eagerly bought up by the fortunate possessors- of. the earliest intelligence, at prices ranging from. 8d (its last quotation) to lid, and it now remains nominally at Is per lb, with comparatively no stocks in dealers' hands. The market has been thus relieved of over 60Q kegs, and although buyers do not seem disposed to advance, it is to be feared that makers may be led into an error similar to one they (ell into some few years back—and hold out for prices above the limit—in which case it is more, than probable the same results may follow: Business in other respects continues exceptionally dull, although, being the commencement of the month, we might have reasonably expected to-see some animation. Company's No. 1 O sugar is low in stock and much enquired for £52 to £54 per ton Gould readily be obtained. At Bethnne and Hunter's auction on the 4th, the Isabella's cargo from Hobart Town sold at fair rates: V.D.L. flour, £l4 per ton; oats, 3s 5d per bushel; palings, 15s to 16s per 100; shingles, 16s 6d per 1000; posts and rails, 60s per 100; potatoes, 55s to 60s per ton ; onions, 7s per- cwt; Hobart Town jams, 8s per dozen.
