[ruon ceil own coeeespondent.] [The following was issued as a Times Extra yesterday evening.] Wellington, Sept. 9, 4 p.m. We have received some sad news from the West Coast, which I hasten to send you. It would appear that our forces had another brush with the rebels at Nguto o te Manu, with what result may be gathered from the following, which is from a Wanganui Times “ Extra ” of Tuesday :

The Colony will grieve to hear that Major Von Tempsky is dead, but nobly fell in battle. Brave Captain Buck, and bis equally brave fellowofficers Captain Palmer, Lieutenant Hastings, and Lieutenant Hunter are also amongst the killed. Lieutenant Rowan has been dangerously wounded. The names of the 1-1 men killed are not recorded in the brief intelligence to band. Yesterday (Monday) our force loft Wailii at 4 a.m., and at 2 p.m. encountered the enemy again at Ngutu o te Manu ; but this time they were thoroughly prepared to give us a warm reception. Not only were the rifle pits, but the tops of trees were manned, and deadly volleys poured in upon our men, who bravely pushed forward, cheered on by their officers, and returned the fire with murderous effect. Twenty-seven Maoris bittho ground How many are wounded we cannot at present say. Our forces retired in good order, and are preparing for another attack. Most of our officers and meu were killed by Haubaus perched in the tops of trees.
