EVACUATION OF MAUNGATAUTARI BY THE REBELS.
In making a reconnaisance of the Maungatantari position from the right bank of the Waikato liiver, we found it abandoned, and the natives retiring up the left bank. The General has sent a detachment to occupy it. LATEST FROM QRAKAU. 101 Maories have been killed, besides 18 to 20 reported by native prisoners to have been buried in the pah. 33 have been taken prisoners; 30 of them wounded. Kevvi has not been found.
The New Zealand Herald of April 6, says, that on our side there were 18 killed and 38 wounded, making a total of 50, while on the part of the enemy 109 dead bodies have already been found, and 30 prisoners have been taken, and, as the prisoners themselves acknowledge, a fact which we glean from a private letter, Ilewi, the great chief of the Ngatimaniapotos—the moving spirit of the present rebellion—is mortally wounded.
