The Panama Route. —The mission of Mr. Crosbie Ward to England has not failed in its object. A contract has been entered into by the Inter-Colonial Royal Mail Company to convey mails by the Panama route for £BO,OOO a year, making Wellington, we suppose, the first port of call. The advantages ailbrded by this route to the whole of the Australian colonies, but to New Zealand more especially, cannot be over-rated. The Bombay.— The cargo of this vessel is one of general interest. The plant of the Auckland Gas Company has arrived, and she also brings a number of packages containing clothing for the Rifle Volunteers. A large supply of arms lias, we learn, been shipped in the Chariot of Fame for the Government by the colonial agent, Mr. Morrison, and will consist of rifles, revolvers, and swords, so that as the proposed levies of Volunteer Militia are enrolled and drafted, arms will be in readiness to be placed in their hands.
Heroism of a Native Woman.— The following instance of devotion, by which the life of a Maori chief was preserved by the act of his wife, at ■ ■ loss of her own, during the late storming of Rangiriri, is worthy of record. The chief Ngakapa, of the Ngatiwhauaunga tribe, was one of the fighting men in the Rangiriri redoubt, and with him was his wife Kangiura, as indeed many other women were present, and fell on the occasion, remaining in the rear and loading the guns, while those they had just loaded were &cing fired by their husbands. During the engagement Eangiura seeing a soldier level his rifle at her husband, at once, and with the quick instinct of affection, threw herself in front of him, and received the bullet, in her own breast. Ngapaka escaped uuhurt. This brave woman who thus sacrificed herself for her husband, was the daughter of a celebrated chief, Te Airoroa, of the same tribe, the Ngatiwhauaunga—H. Z. Herald , Dec. 9.
Holloway's Ointment and Pills.—Out watid Intikmitils.—Before the discovery of t hese remedies, many cases of sores, ulcers, &c., were pronounced to be hopelessly incurable, because the treatment pursued tended to destroy the strength it was incompetent to preserve, and to exasperate the symptoms it was inadequate to remove. Holloway's pills exorcise the most wholesome powers over the skin, without debarring the patient from fresh air and exercise, and thus the constitutional vigor is husbandedwhile the most malignant skin diseases are in process of cure. Both ointment and pills make the blood richer and purer, instead of permitting it to fall into that poor and watery state so fatal to many laboring under chronic ttlWHiiona. - Jrfvf,
