Naval and Military.—We have had no reinforcements during the month. The greater part of the troops are in camp at Otahuhu, where long lines of huts have arisen and ihe tents are gradually disappearing. A grand review was held at Ellerslie on the 20th of all the troops both in, the town and camp. Men and horses were in admirable order. Commodore Seymour has returned from the Fijis and New Caledonia in the Pelorous. The vessels at present on the station are Pelorous, Harrier, and Miranda. The Cordelia may he soon expected to join the squadron.— Southern Cross, Sept. 6. Prize Fiout.—We have been informed that a prize fight came off for £SO a-side, on Panmure beach, on the 29th ultimo, between a smith, residing in Auckland, and a private soldier of the 12th regim ant, stationed at the camp, Otahu. The soldier proved the victor in twenty rounds, which were fought in twenty-five minutes. We beg to call the attention of the police authorities to this disgraceful occurrence, with the view of instituting proceedings against the principals and their abettors.—Southern Cross, Aug. 16. Auckland Mail Steamer.— We are happy to say that steam communication direct between Auckland and Sydney is to be forthwith resumed, and that, next month, the new contract which has been entered into with the Intercolonial Steam Company, will re-commence. The arrangement for this service were concluded on Monday last, and upon terms which we trust will be found conducive to the interests of this community.— 2S r ew Zealander, Aug. 28. A Snuff Story.—A severe snowstorm in the Highlands, which lasted for several weeks, having stopped all communicotiou betwixt neighboring hamlets, snuff takers were reduced to their last pinch. Borrowing and begging from all the neighbors within reach was resorted to, but this soon failed, and all were alike reduced to the extremity which uu willingly-abstinent snuff takers alone know. The minister of the parish was amongst the unhappy number: the craving was so intense that study was out of the question. As a last resort, the beadle was despatched through the snow to a neighboring glen in the hope of getting a supply; but he came c back as unsuccessful as he went. “What’s to bo dune, John?” was the minister’s pathetic enquiry. John shook his head as much as to say that he could not tell; but immediately thereafter started up, as if a new idea had occurred to him. He came back in a few minutes, crying “ Hae.” The minister, too eager to be scrutinizing took a long, deep pinch, and then said “ Whaur did you get it?” “I soupit (swept) the poupit," was John’s expressive reply. The minister’s accumulated superfluous sabbath snuff now came into good use.— Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character. A Cheap Watch. —During the war (1796) a sailor went to Mr. Maclaren, a watchmaker, and presenting a small French watch to him, demanded to know how much the repair of it would come to. Mr. Maclaren, after examining it, said, “It will be more expense repairing than its original cost.” “ I don’t mind that,” said the tar ; I will even give you double the original cost, for I have a veneration for the watch.” “ What might you have given for it ?” said the watchmaker. “ Why,” replied the tar, “ I gave a fellow a blow on the head for it, and if you repair it, I will give you two.”
