LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
We understand that Captain Lambert has temporarily accepted the appointment of Adjutant for the Napier Militia.
We have been informed that it is the intention of the New South Wales Banking Company to establish a branch in Napier, at an early opportunity. Moana Nui, the native chief so well known in this Province, died, as will be seen in our obituary, yesterday. He is distinguished as the opponent of Te Hapuku in the fights of 1857, and was (latterly at least) decidedly adverse to the disposal of land by the Maories to the Government.
Waikato. —On dit that by the last information the natives have received from the Waikato, it is now probable that hostilities will be avoided. Whether or no the new Ministry may have been the means of restoring confidence, and-effecting a better understanding between the natives and the Government, we have not learned; but that the natives here look forward to a more peaceful state of affairs we have beard from several sources.
The framework of the New Church of England is at last reared. This will afford gratification to those w r ho have so long been anxious respecting the progress of this edifice.
