HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s! new totalisator was unpacked on Tuesday and placed in position in the totalisator-nouse on the Hastings racecourse. As the machine will be worked on altogether different lines to the ones we have been accustomed to in Hawke’s Bay. numerous alterations have been made to the totalisator building. The machine itself is 9ft 2in long, 7ft 6in high, and 13in deep, and the opening in front of the building lias been made so that the machine fits in nicely. • All the work, ticket-selling, ringing-on, etc., will be done from the inside of the house. The tickets will be sold from windows, three of which are on either side of the totalisator. A separate set of tickets is handed to each seller for every race. These tickets are numbered from 0 upwards. The first ticket sold on each horse is, therefore, I No. 0, and it will he understood that 1 a glance at the ticket racks will enable j the officials to tell at once how many 1 tickets have been sold on the different [ horses in the race. The investments [ will not be rung on singly, hut in tens, I an official being provided for the puri pose of calculating the numbers of j tickets on each horse, and transmit- [ ting the same to the machinist. The * .machinist stands at the back of the 1 totalisator, and by means of a small I lever registers the tens as he is instructed by the calculator. As each number is brought up on the face of the machine, the same figures are shown at the back, as well as the grand total on the race. The numbers are painted black on white metal plates, and are of such a size that they can be discerned from a distance pf over 50 yards , The machine will accommodate 24 horses, there being four rows of six horses each. When the race starts, an electric boll, which has been fitted over the totalis’ator-house, will be rung by the jucjge, and the sellers’ windows will be immediately closed. Telephonic.’ communication between the clerk sf the scales’ room and the totalise! or-fram'-e has been established, so that scratelafngs can be transmitted to the machine staff at once.
