WORKING LIFE OF NOVELS.
The average working life of a popular novel in a lending library is about four years. This is the estimate of the Bootle librarian in the “Liverpool Daily Post.*' At the recent annual stocktaking in the library ten books were unaccounted for, over 132.000 issues being made during the year. Over a thousand worn-out or imperfect volumes were withdrawn, and of those no fewer than 933 were works of fiction. Mr. G. A. Henty’s works have been depleted to the extent of fifty-nine, this being the highest number; twenty of Miss Braddons novels bad to be withdrawn, and eleven by Miss Marie Corelli,
