“MUSIC.”
Mr Arthur Boult, of Auckland, for many years of the Adelaide Cathedral, delivered a lecture on “Music” in the Athenaeum Hall last night to a largo audience. The Bishop of Waiapu occupied the chair, and briefly introduced the lecturer. Mr Boult spoke very vigorously on the elevating effect of music, and made the plea in favour of considering it ns something more than a mere draw-ing-room accomplishment. He discussed the origin of music and the nature of musical sounds. Then briefly he described the history of the art in more modern times, the discovery of the scale, and its recent developments. An interesting digression had reference to the Gregorian music, which the lecturer said perhaps originated in Egypt, was borrowed by the Jews during the Exodus, used by them later in the services of the Temple, then transferred by the early Christians to Rome, collected from oral tradition by St. Ambrose, and developed by Gregory. Mr. Boult varied his lecture by some amusing anecdotes very well told. A further interest was given by the singing of Master Sorenson, the Auckland boy soprano, whose rendering of “May Day Morn,” ‘Florian’s Song," “The Song the Angels Sing,” “My Beloved Queen,” and “The Night hath a Thousand Eyes” greatly pleased the audience.
Mr Boult will give the second part of his lecture in the Athenaeum Hall to-night. Master Sorenson will sing fresh songs. The proceeds will again be for the Maori Mission funds. Tickets can be obtained at the several booksellers and at Mr Lockver’s.
