Willian Henry Johnson, an Auckland post-office messenger wtho had been charged with secreting two printed papers, and appeared in court with two young men committed for sentence on charges of stealing and forging postal notes, was discharged by Mr Kettle, S.M., upon the application of the Crown Prosecutor. The latter stated that the department were satisfied that Johnson committed the act through carelessness, and not with criminal intent. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. James B. Rainey, master of the steamer Westralia, was charged with proceeding from Lyttelton to Dunedin with 9 firemen and 6 trimmers, instead of 9 firemen, 3 trimmers, and 3 , greasers. Mr J. F. M. Fraser ap- ‘ peared for the prosecution, represent- ! mg Captain Fleming, superintendent of | the mercantile marine. .Mr W. C. Macgregor, for the defendant, held j that the Westralia was under the Aus- , Italian law. which did not apply, also j that no offence was disclosed, as section 7 of the Act did not mention freasers. The case was dismissed, the lagistrate agreeing to state a case for appeal.
