FIRE BRIGADES AT GEELONG.

CABLEGRAMS. [FEB FBES3 ASSOCIATION. —COPTBIQHI.

NEW ZEALANDERS POPULAR. (Received March 11, 3.10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Friday. The Geelong Fire Brigades' Demonstration was highly successful. The town was en fete and illuminated. Prior to the commencement of the practical events a parado and great torchlight procession was held, in which 86 brigades participated, Victorian representatives mustering very strongly. The various events were keenly contested. The New Zealanders won the rescue event in fine style in 18 4-ssec, beating Geelong West by 4 sec, and easily outdistancing all the other competitors. In response to a popular demonstration the New Zealand team paraded on the track and gave the Maori war cry and several novel choruses. They competed in other events, including the hose and ladder practices for eight men, engine practices for one, three and eight men, but though they did excellent work they failed to get placed. In the engine practice for one man Herd, on a Carisbrook, made a world's record of 29 4-Ssec.

A private message received in Dunedin on Wednesday stated that the winners of the rescue event were Firemen Williams (Dunedin) and Peterson (Napier).
