DANNEVIRKE.

[own correspondent.] A number of Ngapaeruru settlers met at the Mangatoro woolshed on Saturday afternoon to consider what steps should be taken regarding the damage that is at prsseut being done to roads by timber waggons. About fourteen settlers attended. It was unanimously resolved, "That this meeting requests the County Council, in its discretion, either to levy a tax on timber or increase the tax on waggons, so as to provide a sufficient sum to meet the increased cost of road maintenance caused by heavy traffic.” As showing the increase of business transacted at the Dannevirke Postoffice it may be mentioned that it has been decided to station an additional clerk at the delivery counter.

A number of visitors have arrived in connection with the Jockey Club’s annual meeting to-day (Tuesday) and Wednesday. A Catholic bazaar was to be opened on Monday evening in the Town Hall by Mr C. Hall, member for the district.

At the meeting of Ngapaeruru settlers on Saturday, the question of the appointment of a justice of the peace for Ngapareruru was referred to.
