MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

MONDAY, MARCH 7th. (Before Mr A. Turnbull, S.M.) Charles Bartlett was charged with bathed in the sea at Port Ahuriri without proper bathing costume. Tho defendant, who tailed to appear, was fined £l, with costs 7s, in default one week’s imprisonment. Samuel Jury Williams admitted having allowed a drain on his premises, Napier-terrace, to become a nuisance, and was fined 10s, with costs £1 Bs. i Thomas Perry Peddle, for having failed to destroy rabbits on his property at Pohui, was fined £l, with costs £2 4s 6d. David Boyd was charged with having, on the sth instant, at Port Ahuriri, assaulted Samuel Rean, causing him actual bodily harm. On the application of Mr Lusk, who appeared for the defendant, the case was adjourned till Monday next. Bail was allowed, defendant in £2O and two sureties in a similar amount each. Wi Hau Han, a Maori, was charged with having on February Bth, at Taradale, stolen a mare amfr foal, the property of John Kirkpatrick. Evidence was given to the effect that the mare and foal had disappeared from a paddock at Fernside, where they were running, and that subsequently accused sold the mare to Mr Arthur Grenside, of Taradale, the foal having been given to a Maori woman. After the witnesses for the prosecution had been examined the accused, in answer to the usual question, said all he wanted to know was how long a sentence he was likely to get. He was committed to take his trial at the next sittings of the Supremo Court. Three boys were charged with stealing gunpowder, the property of James Hardy. Mr Cresswcll appeared for tho defendants, who pleaded guilty. One of the lads, who had been pro viously convicted, was fined 6s. The two others were convicted and discharged.
