OUR ROADS.
The Government placed upon the Estimates for the current, year a certain sum for the Napier-Wairoa-road, including the work upon the Tangoio wash-out and the Waikare bridge. We remarked at the time that it was not likely that the work would be done, and pointed out that these items had already appeared on the previous year’s Estimates. The present financial year will run out in a couple of months. So far nothing whatever has been done to the Tangoio wash-out, and although , we were recently told that the Waikare bridge was to be put in hand at once we believe that beyond the despatch of sundry “Kia ora” telegrams nothing has been done.
It really is time that some pressure was brought to bear on the Government. We believe that there never was any intention of going on with this work. The Government meant to neglect this part of the colony, and although they were compelled to place a small sum on the Estimates they have stuck to their determination. The recent fatality at Petane should stir up the public and the authorities. It has, we believe, had simply no effect. The mailman runs serious risks perhaps half a dozen times every winter at Waikare. Winter will soon be on us, and the river is still unbridged. We have every reason to he disgusted with the treatment meted out to us 'by the powers that he. It would have been better if they had spared some of the" ridiculous ornaments on the new Government buildings, and spent the value of it on the road in question. ■
