[own correspondent.] The many friends of Chief Stock Inspector filler will regret to learn that his nine year-old son Leslie Stewart died at the Napier Hospital yesterday. The funeral takes places at Hastings to day. A sudden death occurred hero early yesterday morning. Mr Scanne 1 appeared for the defendant, and pleaded guilty on his le-half. The affair had been the outcome of a drunken brawl, and Mr Scanncll asked the justices to treat the case leniently. After ■ onsideration, the case was remanded In the next sitting of the S.M. Court mi the 15th instant. Bail was allowed, the defendant in £lO, and two sureties of £lO each. Another native 1 named Moka was charged with stealing two silk handkerchiefs from a Syrian named Peter’Turk, at the racecourse on Saturday. After heating evidence, the bench fined the defendant 20s and costs 10s 6d, or seven days’ imprisonment. James McQiiinn, on remand, was charged with stealing a parcel of clothing from Robert McLoghnan on New Year’s Eve. It appears that the defendant and McLoghnan travelled to Havelock together, and the former, at McLoghnan’s request, left the parcel of clothing at the Havelock Hotel. The defendant afterwards went back, claimed the parcel, and was ultimately found with it in his possession. Jas. McDonald, G. Bentley, and Constable Carmody gave evidence, and the defendant made a statement that when arrested he was taking back the parcel to its owner. The bench dismissed the information.
