[PEB UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, Monday. Sir Joseph Ward spent the afternoon at Ellerslie and other suburban districts. He will leave to-morrow afternoon for New Plymouth. He receives deputations in the Taranaki province on Wednesday, and opens a new post-office at Feilding on Thursday, returning to Wellington the same night.

The Auckland riflemen who are to compete at the meeting at Trenthara, Wellington, left yesterday and to-day. They include some of the best shots who have competed at many New Zealand Bifle Association meetings in the past. An accident took place at Opotiki, Mr F. Butts’ sou, aged five, being drowned. He was playing around a well in the backyard, and overbalanced and fell into six feet of water, striking his head on the bricks as he fell. A considerable time elapsed before he was missed. Wanganui, Monday. The visiting swimmers who are to take part in the Australian championship meeting, were accorded a public reception to-day. The proceedings were most enthusiastic.

Nelson, Monday. Word has been received by cable that W. H. Moyea has passed his first section of the 8.A., and C. E. Fell, G. P. Eogers, and Gerald Fell, each passed the first section of the L.L.B. at the degree examinations of the New Zealand University. All these belong to Nelson College. Hokitika, Monday.

Advices received show that no less than 85 passes have been applied for by delegates purposing to attend the Fire Brigades’ Conference here on the 10th March. The large and representative attendance will constitute something of a record. The proposed exhibition of fire escapes and life saving apparatus will be an attractive feature of the gathering. Dunedin, Monday.

An appeal ia being made on behalf of J. G. 8. Grant, a well-known old identity, who has for many years gained his living by literary work, chiefly pamphlets which he sold himself.
