Sidney, Saturday. Tenders for the New Zealand-South African steam service are called for in the Australian papers this morning.
THE TEEMS. [by telegraph.] Wellington, Saturday. The Government are calling for tenders for a steam service to South Africa. The available subsidy is £BO,OOO and the contract is to be for three years. Steamers are not to be less than 2000 or more than 4000 tons, fitted with refrigerators, accommodation for passengers, mails, and live stock if necessary, and must have a speed of not less than 10 knots. Preference will be given to those having a better speed. The rates of freight are fixed by the Government: Wheat and flour 80s per ton, barley 32s 68, oats 355, bran 40s, hay, io., 37s 6d per ton of 40 cubic feet, potatoes 40a in sacks and 37s 6d in boxes per ton of 60 cnbio feet, frozen meat and dairy produce at the current summer rates ruling between New Zealand and London, other goods not less than current rates between New Zealand and London.
