DANEVIRKE.

[from our own correspondent.] January 24, 1902.

At an informal meeting of the Waipawa licensing committee yesterday, held before Mr W. P. James, S.M. (chairman), and Messrs Henderson and A. Maokay, a conditional license was granted to C, Melville, of tho Mangatera Hotel, for tho Athletic Club’s sports on February 19th, and to G. A. Staunton, Onga unga, for the Makarotu sports. Mr J J. Patterson appeared in support of both applications, sergeant Stagpoole strongly opp sed the granting of these licenses, stating that they were quite unnecessary at such meetings.

At a special meeting of the Danevicke Borough Council last evening it was decided that Wednesday be the day on which the weekly half holiday shall be observed in this borough. The borough solicitor (Mr Lloyd) having given an opinion to the effect that tho Council was protected against any locs by injury to the water mains connecting the reservoir with the town, it was decided not to proceed further at present in the matter of registering the Council’s title to the land along the course of the mains. The Act of 1900 provides'a penalty for wilful injury to waterworks.—The Danevirke Borough Council is considering the question of erecting a public abattoir It has been decided that one shall be provided, and as soon as a suitable site has been selected the erection of the necessary building will be proceeded with. The position* at present is that tenders have been invited for a site, and these are qow in the hands of a sub-committee of the Council. The C'»mmittee will report at the next meeting of tho Council, when it is probable the offer will bo accepted and the purchase completed.— It waa resolved that this Council express its strong abhorrence of the unfounded charges made by a section of the foreign Press against the Right Hon. Joseph Chambenain and the British army with reference to the conduct of the war in south Africa, and has every confidence that the measures adopted by the British in that country are in the best interests of humanity. The following tenders have been accepted in connection with the new stores for the Danevirke Co-operative Association &c. Messrs Calder, Drummond a lid Co-, £1543 j brickwork, Messrs R. Hill and Son, 18s \ painting, Mr G. P. Amor, £ll6 19a j plumbing, Messrs Clayton Bros., £B6 6s ,• total, £2102 2s. It will thus be seen that local people have secured all the contracts for the above costly and handsome edifice. The following are the results of bowling matches played this week: -Championship:—W. Henderson 19, Potts 18, W. Henderson 19, Blakiafcon 17, storey 21, Paul 12, Farrow 21, Bickford 13. Cowper Cup: Elakiston 29, Webber 22, Potts 25, Clayton 22, Irvine 32. Bartlett 14. Handicap Pairs : Bartlett and Nash 26, Chick and Potts 25, Ransom and Storey 26, Clayton and Paul 20. The holders of the Cowper Feathers have received a challenge from a rink to be skipped by Mr W, Henderson.
