The Compensation Court—Jndga Edwards, Mr M’Kerrow (assessor for the Crown), and Mr M’Lean (assessor for lessees)—to-day gave judgment for £1063 on account of £2605 compensation claimed by Messrs Moore Bros, in respect of tho lease of a block of land near Wanganui taken possession of by the Government. A movement is pn foot in Wanganui to inaugurate church choir contests on this coast similar to the brass band contests. The choirs on the coast are to he consulted with a view to arranging a contest early next year. Wkllinoton, Saturday. Mr A. M. Heaton, chief clerk in the railway stores department, died suddenly last night. The Teachers’ Salaries Commission have appointed Messrs Davidson, Hill, Weston, Gilfedder, Hogg, and Stewart "to draw np their reports. WANGANUI RIVER. Wanganui, Saturday, On Saturday last Messrs Hatriok and Co.’s steamer Waiters ascended the Wanganui river to Tawata, a point 110 miles from here, and to within 20 miles of whore the central railway will cross the river. This is the furthest distance that any steamer has been up the river. The Wairere took a large number of natives to the lanyi that is being held over the remains of the fanatical chief Te Keri. PRIZE BIRDS. Wellington, Saturday. The Department of Agriculture bought 63 prize fowls at the Christchurch poultry show, some of which will be kept at the Momohaki and some at the Auckland poultry breeding station on the island of Motutibi, Auckland, to be removed to the new experimental farm near Hamilton. SUDDEN DEATH. Dunedin, Saturday. Mrs Eliza MTntosh, a resident of Lawrence, who had been visiting Dunedin daring the festivities, was found dead in bed. She had been taking drugs to relieve pains caused by a heart affection, and a bottle containing a drug was found alongside her bed.
